RBH at 2015 National Championships

Randwick Botany Harriers was very successful at National Open Championships held in Brisbane over four days, from 26th to 29th March. We had 12 athletes competing including 2 para athletes. The final medal tally for our club was 2 gold and 3 bronze medals.

The most successful athlete was Tamsin Colley who earned two gold medals in Ambulant middle distance races 800m and 1500m. She also came 4th in 200m and 400m Ambulant races. Daniel Jennings, also para athlete, won bronze in Shot Put with best throw of 9.52m.

Among able bodied athletes the medalists were Josh Wright (bronze in 1500m) and Selma Kajan (bronze in 800m). Josh should be happy with his placing, Jeff Riseley and Ryan Gregson (first and second) are in fantastic form at the moment.  Selma was expecting little bit more after running really well through the qualifying round but that is championship racing where anything can happen in slower tactical races. Just outside the medal podium but with fantastic performance was Katelyn Simpson who placed 4th in women's 1500m final with time of 4:12.09 which is her new personal best and also new club record.

We were not so lucky in qualifyng rounds as few athletes just missed out to make the final cut. For instance Molly Blakey missed 400m final for only 0.1 sec. Another similar casualty was James Roff who missed final for just one place or 0.32 sec. His brother Jeremy also missed final despite doing all the work in heat 1 and trying to make his race faster. But that is championship racing with all its uncertainties and all these athletes will come more motivated and better prepared next year. Lachlan Little did very well in his first 400m season progressing to semis and running only 0.07 off his personal best.
